Samsung Accelerates Production at Yongin Wafer Fab by Two Years, SK Hynix Considers Expansion in the U.S.
Samsung Electronics plans to advance the mass production timeline of its first wafer fab at the Yongin semiconductor cluster in South Korea by two years, aiming to commence operations in October 2029. Meanwhile, SK Hynix is considering building new production facilities in the United States to address the semiconductor expansion driven by AI demand. Samsung is constructing a total of six wafer fabs in the Yongin National Industrial Complex, which were originally scheduled to start operations in 2031, but an agreement has been reached with the government to move this date forward to October 2029. The South Korean government will expedite infrastructure development, including land, electricity, and water supply, to support the project's advancement. Since successfully listing on NASDAQ on July 10, SK Hynix has been exploring plans to establish semiconductor production bases in the U.S., where the AI industry is concentrated. Global memory chip leaders like Samsung and SK Hynix are expanding their production capacity to meet the tight chip supply resulting from the AI industry. The South Korean government is also promoting the construction of new semiconductor industrial parks, planning to accelerate project implementation by simplifying environmental assessments and optimizing approval processes. Despite concerns about the peak of the semiconductor cycle, the current market demand for chip capacity remains strong, making the expansion of semiconductor production capacity a key focus in the competition for dominance in the AI era.
